The levying of fuel duty should be used to subsidise the cost of and improve the efficiency of alternative travel such as rail. That would be a great social practice change to allow people to just naturally fall into doing what's needed to reduce emissions.
But when you have vested interests actively pushing back against that it's all the more difficult.
@douginamug Travelling to Holland recently was maybe an example of what the article discusses. I've made a decision to not fly, but that cost me both more time and (bizarrely) more money.Which I am fortunate to be able to take a hit on right now.
Feels hard to say to someone without either of those luxuries that they had made a bad choice to fly, or that they shouldn't travel. Broken system.
That said, plenty of people *with* enough resources not to, still making bad choices!
@douginamug Thanks Doug. These terms are mostly new to me, but the article resonated.
I still think individual choice is important when you have the ability to exercise it, but recognising that not everyone has the agency to make what might be the 'right' choice (whoever determines that!?) even if they want to, because the system is rigged.
#Cooplife is having my worker rights outrage-o-meter cranked up to Extremely Sensitive at all times, forgetting that opendataservices.coop policies are not universal or even close to normal anywhere in the world, and wanting to burn it all down every time I hear even the faintest hint of a company trying to take advantage of an employee. And the employee doesn't really think they're being take advantage of and is trying to tiptoe around the situation so the abuse dosen't get worse. https://rhiaro.co.uk/2019/06/cooplife
I've found Rojava and Jackson very inspiring movements over the past year or so.ย Grassroots and built in areas of intense struggle, they both focus strongly on equality, economic justice and environmental issues.
There's nothing really in-depth in this particular article, but I like the fact that representatives from both movements dialled in to a workshop in Manchester, England.ย Being able to so easily communicate remotely can help us build international solidarity.
Hello fediverse, what online tools do you know about that are LibreSaaSโ you can pay to use them, but the full stack is free/libre open source software so you or others can totally host the entire thing yourself if you want?
