@gdorn Hubzilla and Diaspora seem like the closest projects to Facebook at the moment. (The most developed, at least.) Hubzilla supports ActivityPub, and has concepts analogous to groups/forums, threaded convos. Great intro from @dsh here: https://medium.com/we-distribute/the-do-everything-system-an-in-depth-review-of-hubzilla-3-0-692204177d4e

@Megan Very true. It's important for the alternative structures to be resilient to just getting reconsumed by capital.

Great to see reuse and recycling flagged as key parts of the Jackson plan, part of a deemphasis of production/consumption. Even tool libraries get a mention! I'd like to see repair get more of an explicit mention too.

Places bypassed by capital might provide the best opportunity for alternative economies.

"the weak and relatively sparse concentration of capital in Mississippi creates a degree of "breathing room" on the margins and within the cracks of the capitalist system that a project like ours can maneuver and experiment within in the quest to build a viable anti-capitalist alternative."

Makes me think cities like London are probably lost causes for now.

Loving the first chapter of Jackson Rising. Straight-up practical details on bootstrapping a solidarity economy, from people that are doing it, and doing it in pretty adverse conditions.

Voting closed, and the next book for the social.coop reading group will be Jackson Rising: The Struggle for Economic Democracy and Black Self-Determination in Jackson, Mississippi.

"Jackson Rising is a chronicle of one of the most dynamic, but under-documented experiments in radical social transformation taking place in the United States."

Looking forward to learning about Cooperation Jackson.

And with that, I'll pass the hosting baton on to @Matt_Noyes. Cheers!

@douginamug For web apps I like the model where everything is 100% freely licensed and self-hostable, but the project itself offers hosting. Wallabag does that with https://wallabag.it, though I don't know how well it sustains them.

That doesn't work for applications though. At social.coop we've also been thinking a little recently about if/how the coop model could be applied to FOSS projects. Some discussion here: https://www.loomio.org/d/r1KuYn6q/foss-cooperatives-a-white-paper-

      FOSS cooperatives - A white paper (?)
      from Loomio
Hi all, following the few toots I exchanged with @doubleloop earlier today, I figured we could gather resources and maybe even collaboratively write something around FOSS and cooperatives. As I said on the instance, it could be interesting for communities to evolve past the current model of loose, voluntary particpation and embrace that of the cooperative. Such a change would not only provide better financial stability, but would also rid the FOSS environment of the "benevolent dictator" and usher in a new era of democratic decisionmaking and accountability. As @doubleloop pointed out, there are few examples of FOSS coops right now and I am not aware of any written material around this topic, so if anyone has something to share, please feel free. I belive gathering material and getting to publish something as a group would be a great way to reinforce our commmunity spirit as well as a way to stay true to our core value of promoting cooperatives.

      Social.Coop - Reading Group
      from Loomio
Purpose: To facilitate social.coop members reading and discussing texts of varying genres that communicate a positive or cooperative vision of society, offer practical solutions for cooperative practitioners and organizers, and/or examine the successes and failures of cooperative movements of the past and present. Infrastructure: The reading group will be organized and governed on a sub-group of the social.coop Loomio project, and will be open to all interested social.coop members. Members will be encouraged to post a short statement of interest and any questions they might have to the sub-group upon joining. Reading Selection Process: - All members may add as many books as they want whose subjects align with the group’s purpose to a shared spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZvZ_MLq1dAVBCY7-e9Iylg-qxWYqkcptjvOnkyOTeTA/edit?usp=sharing). Entries include name, author, pub date, pages, a description lifted from the publisher’s website or similar source, and the submitter's name. - At the conclusion of each meeting, a random number generator is used to select 8 books from the list. - Club members rank-choice vote the 8 options with the default 6 day voting period. The winner is the text to be read for the meeting after the subsequent one, thus allowing for approximately two months lead time for reading. Meetings and Discussions: - The person who suggested the winning text agrees to be the "host" for a given month. Don't suggest texts if you're not prepared to host. :-) - Hosting means promoting asynchronous and synchronous conversation about the text, as well as ensuring that the vote for the next text happens. - Asynchronous conversations may include posts on social.coop and in the Loomio subgroup. - Synchronous conversations may include the use of the social.coop chat-room, as well as scheduled calls. - Scheduling: Create a schedule poll with between four and eight possible times the host is available for the call to take approximately a month after the next scheduled call. - Call Logistics: The host is responsible for choosing the platform on which the call is to take place, and disseminating instructions for accessing the call platform via an RSVP β€œCheck Poll” in the Loomio subgroup. - The reading group encourages experimentation with a range of meeting and discussion formats that work for the participating members.

Further thoughts on Issues that still need to be resolved on "permanent web" stuff #ipfs, #scuttlebutt:

You don't want the absurdly powerful / gov't /corps to hide information. (permanent data = transparency of the institutions).

But you want to be able to let humans change their minds after they publish something to make it unavailable. Humans must be in control of their personal data. (privacy of the individuals).

    You need permanence for transparency.

    You need mutability for privacy.
