@amy (disclaimer: I have a degree in a natural language but I'm not an expert)

I would say exposure to language in context makes things "stick" in a very natural way. Speaking it with a native after you've grasped the basics "scholastically" helps, but listening to native speakers talk in a context where you can glean what's being said cements those lessons.
