@batalanto @hyploma @nurinoas Matrix is a communication protocol. You use whatever server you want. The Matrix.org one happens to be behind CF due to DDoS. It's very unclear why any of the alternatives at https://codeberg.org/crimeflare/cloudflare-tor/src/branch/master/subfiles/cloudflare-alternatives.md are any more of a privacy risk than CF. If you don't use CF, pick a Matrix server that doesn't use CF.

@nurinoas @batalanto @hyploma to mitigate a massive DDoS. suggestions welcome for a better CDN to shield behind.

@tokudan nobody said anything about signing everything(!) - just giving the option to send signed messages using matrix's existing PKI, just like you can with PGP. And yes, if the attacker had compromised keys held on endpoints then they could still have spoofed messages. Which is way way harder than a mere social engineering attack on a twitter employee.

@batalanto @hyploma matrix isn't dependent on cloudflare. pick or run a server that isn't behind CF if you don't like CF.

In a decentralised world, an inside job could only impact a single server instance... and in an E2EE verified world, the insider wouldn't be able to spoof messages anyway. We should get on and add signing for public messages to Matrix's E2EE.
