@Are0h if you have the time/inclination to answer, as a cyber user, in your opinion what's the best way forward here? Is it sufficient for us (c.s users) to do better in reporting creeps on our instance? (I've have this guy blocked for months, but I don't know if I reported him or not.) Is there a problem with the admin response, which we could possibly fix? Is the instance irrevocably tainted by this kind of thing?

I'm really looking for the best thing to do here.

It’s honestly so frustrating to find out just how much of the FOSS community belongs in a trash heap. The lack of empathy, of a sense of ethics beyond free software, is startling.

BUT at the same time I do recognize it's necessary for me to be aware of the structures I'm supporting by doing that

like probably a lot of my hesitation is based on how shit today was, which isn't much of a valid way to make decisions

very inclined to go with ro's take just based on past experience; he's usually right about things

same time, "cybre user" is like a big part of my online identity and it seems like chr handled it alright once a report was sent through?

people are entitled - even duty-bound! - to protect their communities

but i do feel like telling the _users_ of an instance what is going on is a good idea

if the admins of my instance are causing a problem i want to know about it! i don't want to be part of said problem!

of course there's a problem with that; how can we be sure a post has reached all/enough of those users?

it's a real problem

we owe it to the users of instances we block to announce we're doing so _and why_ so that they can choose to move instances if they lose access to their friends/contacts

no we don't owe them that access - it's fine to block/silence instances over moderation decisions, assuming good faith &c - but we do owe them the knowledge of why they are losing that access, especially if it's not their fault.
