@wbtd @Shutsumon how would you effectively do that? I'm genuinely interested in what methods you can think of.

@uglyhack ... not your right to use money to impose some advertising material on everyone who happens to walk past.

@uglyhack Of course some good things come out of advertising: a movie you loved, a good non-profit to donate to, a bank that's more ethical than others, a government's free vax campaign, a road safety message... But I believe banning commercial advertising will solve way more problems than it will create. About free speech, I don't think you've got your definition right: it's about your right to "articulate your opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction"...

@uglyhack I think you might be more talking about communicating than advertising. I guess when I say that, I really think big ugly billboards, annoying online ads and endless gruelling ad breaks on TV. I don't think you can sincerely state that advertising is primarily about "making someone else's life better", this is not being realistic about how it is used currently. One example: try and do some stats on food advertising you see in the next week. What percentage is healthy vs junk?

@Shutsumon okay, I can see there are certain use that can be justified. Another example would be a government doing a PSA / sharing I formation that benefits the community, e.g. healthy eating, sustainable practices... heck, I even like seeing ads from my bank because they’re awesome!
What would you think of a « ban on all commercial advertising » then? I.e. non-profit, research institutes, local councils, community groups and government are exempt.

@M0YNG I also think that the benefits of a ban largely outweigh the challenges it creates. Advertising as we see it today is only possible because of an infinite growth logic, which we have to move away from as soon as possible.

If you answered something along the lines of “something to make people buy things”, here’s a follow-up question:

“Why should we allow something that promotes consumerism, the very thing that is wrecking our environment and endangering our livelihood?”
