Excited about my second day physically back at work at SNOLAB. I will be splitting my time today between the surface building at the lab site and our space at Laurentian University. Looking forward to running into SNO folks who are in Sudbury for their collaboration meeting this week.

From AJamesMcCarthy https://twitter.com/AJamesMcCarthy on Twitter: On Friday, the sun put on a dazzling show for us. My friend @TheVastReaches and I worked hard over the last 5 days to produce this incredibly detailed 140 megapixel image to illustrate how wonderfully dynamic and beautiful our star can be. Make sure you zoom in! https://twitter.com/AJamesMcCarthy/status/1638648459002806272/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/de8ba7986a41e177cee4847d10a0d3347a253edf8f176772f199e20abd1a507c/view

Had a chance to read through the new XENONnT science run 0 results. Overall, a nice step forward. Of particular interest to me was the observation vs. prediction of 6x more neutron background expected than predicted from simulation. 3 cheers for data-driven methods! https:// xenonexperiment.org/wp-content /uploads/2023/03/xenonnt_wimp_results_preprint_march2023.pdf https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/7f27f3da2a53fc128ca90b618ae817fdea3d80cc73c575bfbfa21a331c63cd48/view

In case you're looking for it, here is the XENON Collaboration pre-print of their analysis of the existing XENONnT dark matter search data. https:// xenonexperiment.org/wp-content /uploads/2023/03/xenonnt_wimp_results_preprint_march2023.pdf

Had to leave the XENON presentation due to participants unprofessionally interrupting the speaker and people being extremely rude in chat. The organizers did not lock down Zoom before admitting people, so anyone was free to unmute their mic, set their name, or show their camera, which is extremely dangerous in the modern era. I will wait for the paper and/or the press release about the results.

From ProPublica@newsie.social on Mastodon: CORRECTION: The above post has been edited to correct an error in the original version of the story, which had incorrectly described Jim Jordan’s letters. They are requests for information, not subpoenas.

Excited to be back to the lab and working in person. Nothing accelerates science faster than real human interactivity. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/66cbaa53d6d9f8ca8ff92b27d2b4e8f8b567ce5f6b3c816e5f2a7add4df6591c/view

Hooray! 2nd negative test in 48 hours! Masking up and heading back to in-person work. Have I missed being at SNOLAB! https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/faf2d437ee07dacbf2e0d6c3ce2a89316a51133bc3727d8a3d60825cbf1f28ca/view

Today’s XENON Collaboration seminar speaker is from Mainz University in Germany. Among its many research features, one of my favorite things about Mainz is the Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics (MITP) which has an EXCELLENT YouTube channel of chalkboard lectures on a range of physics subjects. You get a deep dive in each subject, building to greater and greater detail over each speaker’s series of lectures. https:// youtube.com/@mainzinstitutefor theoretic1604

Check out the presentation (08:30 ET) from the XENON Collaboration on the 1st dark matter search results from XENONnT, the current phase of their experimental program. Learn more about their technology and see the first steps into a new sensitivity regime for WIMP-like dark matter candidates! XENONnT is hosted by INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) and is shielded by a 1.4km rock overburden. https:// twitter.com/xenonexperiment/st atus/1638323141133869057?s=12&t=IrY8MdYHgcczJojvQJkGBA https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/f5a9400c7a6676de32ec03b87136a0eb110416a5c1f0b6d7fc409815983298cd/view

From ProPublica@newsie.social on Mastodon: GOP Rep. Jim Jordan Issues Sweeping Subpoenas to Universities Researching Disinformation -- In the subpoenas, Jordan asserted that the schools may have contributed to the Biden administration’s “censorship regime by advising on so-called misinformation.” Among the schools that ProPublica confirmed received subpoenas are Stanford, Univ. of Washington

From AJamesMcCarthy https://twitter.com/AJamesMcCarthy on Twitter: Friday I captured around 200k images of our sun. I asked my friend @TheVastReaches for help working all the data so we could create an incredibly detailed image of our star, and we're nearly done.
