i guess I've never actually said this to all y'all before, but opinion time: if you're on mastodon.social I 100% think you should leave it
i understand leaving a backup account there because it's one of the least likely to go down english-speaking instances on the fediverse, but mastsoc is harmful to federation
ideally, host your own instance, or get together some of your friends (and hopefully at least one sysadmin) and host one together for the lot of you, where all of you chip in. My instance costs $5 a month
as a backup, join the instance of someone you personally trust, imo if you can't form a personal relationship with the admin within reason, the instance is too big
also, pleroma is good damn software and it's getting better by the day, if you just want a closed instance for you and your friends, i highly recommend it, although open instances can be problematic because of it having weaker moderation tools than mastodonIn conversation from fuckonthefirst.date permalink Repeated by hexmasteen -

Programming isn't about what you know; it's about what you can figure out.
Every great developer you know got there by solving problems they were unqualified to solve until they actually did it.

One of the most frequent questions we get is: Why doesn't Tusky support push notifications?
Because pushing to devices would require us to use proprietary Google libraries and to run a relay server. But we want Tusky to be pure FOSS (free and open-source software) and don't want to send any data to Google so we decided not to implement push notifications at this time. We are researching other possibilities to make notifications faster though.

With all my gripes with# Signal (centralized, non-federated, server-based, Electron-based desktop app), the fact that in my circle of contacts it's not longer the "pretty good solution we should be using" but the "pretty good solution we are using but looking for something better" is such a win.
I just wanted to stop for a second and appreciate that.
If we're talking about the need to move to something better than Signal, we are in a pretty decent place.
