@feld @angristan NAT and private IP ranges are not the same thing. There were 3 or so years between their RFC’s. When RFC1918 was written an enterprise wanting to connect to the internet was expected to readdress at least some of their network.

And NAT solved a real IPv4 problem long before IPv6 was viable.

And non-routable IPv6 addresses have a real use now.

@angristan Try to get a look at the quarterly AWS bill, then you’ll really wonder why any decent size company uses AWS.

@TheLongLost1 No one cares? No one at Microsoft cares? They haven't received enough feedback that it would be a worthwhile feature? Not every reason is technical and just because X does it doesn't mean Y must.

I honestly never use tabs in my file explorer. I wouldn't care if it was implemented in Windows. In fact, I'd rather they not waste their time on it. I find the feature annoying when I accidentally hit ⌘T and a Finder tab opens.

Work pays for a Safari Books Online account, and they have a whole host of training webinars.

I have to stop signing up for them or I'll never have any time to do actual work.

@angristan Assuming 'Coinbase is probably one of the company making the most money in the world right now' is true, which I doubt it is, am I supposed to think that $2500/month is a lot?

That's less than the cost of one full time developer.

@espectalll Also, I was unaware I said it didn't apply to CLI interfaces.

Your explicit ask is to have a GUI that works well as a event driven user interface as well as a batch driven singular step in a workflow. These are very different functions, with very different pressures and very different measures of success.

@espectalll And plenty of CLI's on UNIX do mess shit up, but they don't go much of anywhere. Unless they take text in and produce text out with manipulation of the data indicated by flags, they don't become popular. The limitation of the text console either locally, via cron or over ssh is what enforces that behaviour. Not any standard body, not any company.

That's why it works, the reality of the environment you're working in. A reality that is not shared by a GUI.

@astro It's so sad. I used to be able to confidently buy Playstations because I knew the Final Fantasies on it were going to make it worth it. The PS3 was the first time I questioned that and the PS4 was bought for Disgaea.

SE hasn't made a decent FF since X-2 and expansions for FF11 beyond CoP appear to have been made to explicitly screw that experience up.

At least they didn't screw up NieR, but then again, they only published it.

@espectalll who’s going to enforce the standard?

CLI’s only seem to adhere to one because of limitations to the interface they’re run in and the fact that command line tools that get cute with their output just don’t become popular.

On top of that do this thing (batch processing) and wait for user input (GUI) are very different design patterns with very different requirements. Tools made to do everything rarely do anything well.

@espectalll a large part is that gui’s don’t lend themselves to outputting information in a generic way, and then that gui’s by design are set up to sit and wait for input to tell it what to do. The information expected is a mixture of data, processing instructions and output formatting details.

The short of it is a GUI is a platform for organizing a series of steps, a cli tool is simply one of those steps.
