@deejoe It was in Bay Area so sure there were more physicists per capita. But I’d never seen this kid before (or since). He was just on patrol for someone to talk shop with.

"Oh! That makes sense. Thanks!" And he wandered off, not having needed to use the bathroom, but just looking for an adult to ask a physics question. I hope the some time in the future it occurs to him that maybe not everyone would have answered him like that, and it makes him happy that someone did.

So I talked about kinetic energy and inertia, and the relative masses between the two ("Pretend you have a bullet with a mass of one kilogram..." "Thank you for using the metric system!" "We're doing physics here, kid."), and I illustrated with a story about the recoil of the guns of the U.S.S. Missouri.

I was in line to use the bathroom when a young kid, maybe Tek Jr’s age, walked up to me. "Could I ask you a physics question?" "Yes, you may." "If you shot a ship with a bullet, why wouldn't the ship bounce off it as fast as the bullet was flying?"
