I was inspired by @darius 's essay about small social networks and wrote a few words on my own experiences over the year building online communities.

I'm extremely pleased to launch Run Your Own Social: How to run a small social network site for you friends.

This is a guide book to running a small, tight-knit federated social network server. It comes from my year of experience running Friend Camp. It's focused largely on SOCIAL solutions, though it does touch on the technical.

I've tried to keep it technology-neutral, and it should be a pretty easy read for anyone who's been on the fediverse for a while.

@darius IBM's biggest wound was its incredible insularity. They were a de facto monopoly and thus wrote their own standards and continued to keep them for far to long. Classic IBM engineers can recite the catalog numbers for parts and coded in languages often not transferrable to other systems. It's a lot like MSFT coders from the mid-late 90s. As late as 2001, I was still writing EBCDIC translations for basic strings from an IBM database.

Why does every bigot fancy himself a statistician?

Alright, lemme see your p-values, where's your prior distribution, what model are you fitting, did you pick a distribution from the exponential family, what are your error bounds, got a confidence or probability interval to back up those claims, big boy?

All Clear mode in Tetris Effect has a puzzle where the solution is to take the first line block, drop it in a 5 high gap, rotate it into a 5 wide horizontal gap, then spin it the other way to get it into the four high gap in the bottom, then spin the next block into the horizontal gap, which then leaves a four high for the last piece and yeah, I can do it but those should NOT be valid moves.

@mwlucas when Aquaman (featuring Julie Andrews as the terrifying deep sea creature near the end) and Mary Poppins Returns (since Julie Andrews played that character in the first film) were in theatres at the same time my siblings and I and some friends arranged a double header screening to compare and contrast!

(Consensus was that Aquaman had more gratuitous ab muscle shots but Mary Poppins Returns had better musical numbers even despite the octopus drummer)
