@tpheine :) I was thinking of maybe writing a blog post. But I have an even worse track record with those than HPR.

to use letsencrypt you need a domain :) I tried to explain how I use it to get a cert for an internal server - but it probably got a bit confusing. There are a few steps involved. It's not that complicated when you tried it but probably a bit to complicated to explain in a post here.
-
So you need a domain. I also have a static ip on the wan site and an internal dns-server (I use unbound). You set the subdomain you want at your registrar and use letsencryopt to do a dns challenge - you set a txt record at your registrar (or where every you host your dns) and the client does the dns challenge and wolla you have a cert :). You do need to have an internal dns server to point to your internal server with an internal ip.

:) I buy a whole bunch of them at a time - they go in the freezer (I probably could dry them as well but that involves work)

I use the dns challenge on my lan for servers that you can't reach from the internet - works like a charm :) (there are some manual steps but not that bad)
-
I'm mostly the reason for it being hostile :)
-
my librenms server is now secured with letsencrypt - even if it's on my local lan - tls is important (it's a hostile place)
