    /freebsdhandbook/forums :) I have zfs on spinning disks as well but it's unlikely that I'll have to upgrade the pool on those anytime soon (I often overprovision stuff).

    it's on a vps :) so upgraded the vps - > boot into rescure image-> gparted recover da0 -> gparted resize -i 3 /dev/da0 -> zpool import -R /mnt -o autoexpand=on zroot -> zpool online -e zroot da0p3.

    I'm not that good at zfs stuff - but resizing the pool was painless I now have 2 cores/4GB ram/40GB HD. next setup jails for haproxy, certbot, and different webapps
