I find that these sorts behaviours uncomfortable.
It implies that you need to write things in certain way to be 'accepted' by the community. It indicates there are gatekeepers to that community, even if the gatekeeping is with good intent.
You have a small group who have taken it upon themselves to add these little rules and even police others.
It's not user friendly if you have to use jargon, or if you have to be online everyday to learn what the changing rules are.

I forgot who wrote this first (thank you to the person!) but the List feature (go to "Getting Started" then "Lists") is very useful. You can create a List, then "Edit List" to add accounts that you follow.
Also if you unsubscribe to them, they are not longer there but will appear again once you re-subscribe to them.
Very useful especially when catching up with folks that are in different timezones to you. Or for 'special interest' lists. Or even bot lists.

I deleted my FB/IG accounts in 2014 citing privacy reasons and being tired of social media.
The worst thing about it, and especially the case when you are on the move, is that people are still on these and energy still spent 'with friends' on these. The cost of not being on these platforms is a big social cost.
Now all I have is Twitter which is mainly work and just high noise now. And new places like Mastodon which, while there are nice folks/strangers, is just not the same.

It seems that the 'Hide everything from _domain_' does not work if you already follow them, so their updates are in your timeline.
Very interesting and a bit surprising. I guess, it's an example of user expectation of a feature vs reality.
