Oh! I am gonna call it "shared computing", for now.
Because I am only 99% sure I would stick with "compushare". π

Wow, #TraderWars maiki?
Yeah yeah, I meant https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_Wars. #TradeWars
@satchmoz there is a similar concept about BBS doors called, um, BBSlinks, I think. It allowed people to play #TraderWars across systems. How did that work? Did the BBS call each other, a kind of proxy or relay?
Also, I've seen tilde* nodes create inter-tilde mail and news systems. Which is, I don't, a cool weekend project, but is that really what we want *on top of* the internet?
Sudden tangential idea:
Is it possible to have a federated public unix access system? If that makes any sense?
Users with accounts on separate servers, but they could all share files and run programs off of each other's instances across a distributed file system?
Couple this with GNU HURD's concept of running services and servers at a user level.
@satchmoz let's try an experiment (it is opt in, so let me know).
> Donβt ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. - Howard Thurman
My proposal is, let's filter everything we research and discuss for this Project X, though the lens of what makes us come alive.
My hypothesis is that we could create something we love personally, that also helps the world. Whatcha think?
@satchmoz Okay, paracosmic-frolic it is! π
@maiki considering SDF's naming roots. (Macross, Anime) Something that compliments your own entertainment interests with a more egalitarian ethos?
@satchmoz "Social club" and "shell provider", let's presume those are two ends of a spectrum; where would you like to land on it? Is this something you can tell a passerby about, or is it something you share with geeks?
@satchmoz I don't know how active they are, but about the tilde* server, riotgirl.club stood out as a candidate to join, in case you want to research a tilde server.
@satchmoz oh, no, that is completely okay! I imagine that anything we build is going to be wrapped in a big bright pink bow, above our radically queer feminist TOS. ^_^
@satchmoz Haha, yeah!
Hey, what is this thing? Each time I try to describe it I find descriptors that aren't bad or adverse, but may be kinda limiting.
For instance, is it a "public access... server? service? network?" Is it actually public? Is it a single server?
I don't need answers, I just need the generic thing to reference. π€
@satchmoz I need to get this kid outside, but when I come back I will start a note about our "modern" server thing wishlist.
One thing to think about, the step zero for me, is how to provision hardware. In some ways I'd love to run a box out of a datacenter, but then I think of two things:
1. I'd be on the hook to trek out when something breaks, and
2. The current mail scene with SDF-EU.
Virtualization seems amazing when considering something like mailing drives int'lly. Thoughts?
@satchmoz OMG, that would actually be fairly easy, and I don't even know how to code! Like, that needs to happen!
Maybe that is a good use of my SDF gopherspace! ^_^
@satchmoz I was gonna ask you which kind of gamebook you meant, but gopher works for all of them!
If "Wizard, Warrior and You" gopherspaces show up, I wouldn't be surprised if the about file isn't filled with "^_^" smileys. ^_^
@maiki In that vein I kind of want to try my hand at gopher based interactive fiction or gopher versions of gamebooks at some point.
Sudden thought I had this morning.
Oh yeah, did you peeps know I do web hosting and site building? I know it is super apparent from my home page (https://web.archive.org/web/20171016221328/https://interi.org/), but whenever I mention my servers folks a little surprised.
I am also a decent human, and try to be of service to others, so if you know someone that needs a person like me that knows the stuff I know, let them know! ^_^
@clacke I used the Chromium plugin for it. But I couldn't continue using it since my mobile doesn't have Google services on it.
Signal was limited for what my peeps wanted, and OMEMO + Prosody fit really well, except of course desktop support.
I personally like federation over a single company, despite the tech involved.
@Ricardus whaaaaat?! That sounds amazing!
@maiki It was one guy with a Korg Triton switching between organ and orchestral patches. At times it was a symphony, and at times, not. It was freakin crazy cool.
@Ricardus was it one person, or a band or symphony? I've seen there are symphony shows for movies, seem super interesting!
