@garrett @federicomena yes, I think something like that is the long term solution. As @brion mentions it largely needs a champion and developer.

@federicomena Probably the real solution is for wikimedia to provide tools for the type of problems that they're solving instead of relying on the file format. So one could upload a file with selectable values that an individual story could set. (i.e. the individual country colors on a map)

@federicomena yeah, it's not all about size though. Some are maps and such where they're hand editing the color values for visualization in derivative maps. Which would be hard for any tool to maintain. I'd argue that CSS is better than hand editing SVG there, but I do have some sympathy for what they're suggesting.

@marie that would be great. But it is important to remember that it isn't only data and sources, but also tools.
There are a lot of great graphics and visualization tools that are openly available. But, there are many that have more restricted distribution. When one of those tools is used, it restricts the conversation as well.

Not thrilled to find out wikimedia has an anti-Inkscape logo.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anti-Inkscape.svg
I understand what they're trying to express by looking at the examples. But it seems like pro-text editor is a better position to take.

@marie I think what would be interesting is to provide the "source" of what you're doing. So if I thought a stacked bar chart was a bad choice, I could fork and adjust it, then show that my visualization was better. A lot of discussion can be avoided with a simple graphic, which you clearly realize, but also about the visualization choices themselves.

Are you going to SCALE 16x on March 8–11? Will your brain liquefy if you're forced to sit through yet another monotonous talk on 'container orchestration' or 'blockchains'? Good news; you can come to the Libre Graphics track instead:

Do it for your health!

@popey I've found that as I've gotten older, and with less hair, I've found more use for caps.

@tinker cool, I'd recommend looking at 96boards, they have a fixed form factor and many chip vendors. Might be a way for you to not choose the specific board, but let the other HW/case/etc match the which ever someone wants.

@n8 I've never found one I believed in. If you do, I'd be interested to hear about it. It'd also be interesting if it'd work with Google Fi, just to get the lower price for something you'd never expect to use.

In other news: there are just TWO WEEKS LEFT to submit a session proposal to Texas Linux Fest.
https://2018.texaslinuxfest.org/call-for-papers-9
Come to Austin the weekend of June 8 & 9! You won't find a better city to spend a weekend in, and you get to do it before the summer heat wave hits, so all the software freedom on display will be nice and cool.

@tinker if nothing else to be able to answer the question: "Is that a bananaphone in your pocket?"

@tinker would be nice, the kernel is always the tell. If they're running old kernels they're probably running Android stuff in there and not a good sign.
Doubt we'll get much info on that until they get in consumer's hands though.

Amazing how much stuff I can get done when I'm avoiding working on my presentation for SCALE in a couple weeks. Really need to work on that... soon!

@patdavid @garrett perhaps we need a "Planet Ted" 😉
Another idea that could be interesting is to use the content warning to be able to filter posts from someone. So then I could follow Pat minus posts tagged as "pictures of food".

@patdavid @garrett yes, a lot of grey. I'm not sure how it works out in the end. But I am interested!
Perhaps we have to grow as a society to understand that people do have different roles, with different opinions in those roles. I think that could happen with one account, but not sure if its easier if I can identify which role I'm speaking in.

@patdavid @garrett the use-case I'm imagining would be like a super-fan of a sports team, and an instance dedicated to that. So then it would be considered appropriate to post constantly about a given match while it was going on. But, if you were also into computers, those posts might not be appropriate in a different context.
Also, for something like the CEO of a company. So they'd have one account when speaking as a representative of the company and one when not.
