@KitRedgrave a kind of similar event that a lot of cities do is jane's walk - free neighbourhood walking tours, often historically / culturally / community themed https://janeswalk.org/about/
for non-Torontonians: it's an annual weekend event where various historic / architecturally cool / culturally significant / usually secret buildings are open to the public.
big draws this year include lower bay (abandoned subway station often used as a filming location), ubisoft's toronto hq, malabar costume warehouse, and various film studios
I think it's also interesting to note that Ruth is an migrant farm worker. Imagine how we would tell the story if it happened today, in <wherever you're from>.
The best thing I've read all day: the saga of Sheffield's tree massacre. Involves mass civil disobedience, a secret multi-billion dollar contract, and more. (via @iona)
"I’m pretty neutral but, really, maybe leave our trees alone?"
It must be emphasized that driver entitlement doesn't come out of nowhere. Drivers are entitled because they have *incredible* political power. Council has repeatedly voted down less expensive, more efficient projects because they would inconvenience car drivers by MINUTES.
#midgepocalypse update: the sac spiders that live by my window are apparently taking the night off, having been overwhelmed with more midges than they can possibly eat. Slackers. Get out there and do your jobs!
Big exciting social.coop stuff: @CobaltVelvet of hosting service #Maastodon needs to share the workload, is interested in making it a cooperative/transferring responsibility to us!
I could probably look this up but does anyone know where the practice of flying flags at half mast to symbolize a collective mourning of tragedy originated?
I was out and about yesterday and noticed a bunch of flags flying at half mast (in response to the Toronto van attack).
Even non-arachnophiles may get a little misty by the end.
One snippet:
> On 16's 40th birthday, Mason said, she asked if she could give the spider a mealworm. > > “Barbara wouldn’t let me,” she said. “It interfered with the study.”
