it feels very weird that companies can settle union-busting claims like this without a union forming. like, you fire some people, you pay a fine that says “go away now”, and business goes on like usual. what are the next unionists supposed to expect? that they’ll be fired too, sans consequence? lmao i guess so!

feels weird that union busting is illegal and yet so normal that you can write an article about all the illegal union busting going on in an industry and still conclude “i guess nobody wants to unionize!”

in the final episode of HBO's chilling miniseries "Cloudflare", a distributed systems engineer explains to the investigative committee that although Cloudflare recklessly sought a market dominance that made the web brittle and fragile, it was in fact the broader capitalist context that made it wise for them to do so. only the telecom lobby understands the gravity of the accusation, and endeavors successfully to blackball the engineer as a hopeless political radical.

i will not let fash take the spelling "fren". goddamnit. i feel like every day these fuckers lick something and declare "this is mine now." don't let them have it! symbolism matters and their feeble attempts to taint symbols like bread, clowns, and an adorably misspelling of "friend" can be overcome. together, we are strong! ✊

it sometimes feels like black mirror is trying to “say what everyone is already thinking” but the trouble then is that i’m exhausted of thinking it already. “phones bad” “capitalism bad” “computer bad” yawn yawn yawn
i want stories and art that not only confront that intersection of late capitalism and ecodoom, but that take the structural critique as pretense to explore how to do right by each other amid the bleakness, as individuals and communities.

i like watching black mirror. it’s like reading a barometer.
black mirror struggles to articulate a structural critique of modernity and so instead is left with “what if” scenarios that have generally already happened, that happen in isolated fragments of modernity.
it strikes me that climate change is not a constant companion of these stories. episodes rarely deal with the climate at all; it’s a separate “what if” entirely.

thanos: oh, ok. i do see your data, and it does make sense. seems this “malthus” was full of shit all along!
thanos: might as well use this gauntlet to end capitalism 🤷♀️

remember when fash tried to claim bread as a symbol and couldn’t because we didn’t let them? bread is the symbol of plenty 🍞✊️❤️
fash try hard to weaponize their own toxicity but it often amounts to licking your door and saying “this is my house now.” fuck that! get out of here

i am enthusiastic about the possibilities of tech like i am enthusiastic about the spirit of mutualism and solidarity that casts out poverty and animus alike, but i am demoralized over and over again by the reality of its governing dynamics. trust no corper, trust no merchant — trust not even yourself who becomes the dictator and imagines benevolence!

a game like Papers Please where you are a bureaucrat in cybersyn. it’s your job to call factories, schools, etc., to get daily reports and to pass those along to the appropriate parts of the system. the whole UI is your desk, a phone, and a pile of notebooks.
but as the CIA ramps up efforts against chile, the data you gather becomes strange, and the system to which you report grows populous and complicated. the consequences of your banal choices multiply over and over again.

@garbados @morganmay Yeah, this is important to say. I make a habit of saying what's happening every day, just out loud or in a post, because we're daily inundated 24/7 from every TV channel, social media, public and private institution with the *real* conspiracy theory: that America is a democracy where everyone is living a great middle class life -- except for you.
The truth is 70% of America is living in poverty after accounting for healthcare and rent. It is a third world country.
