Uber wants to replace drivers in the long run. They built a VC-backed non-profitible business model, that they KNEW would never be profitable as long as they have drivers

If Uber must treat their drivers as employees, they will either fold or have to convince more VCs that they'll be able to switch to automonous taxis soon enough that it's worth investing more

reasons teslas felt so futuristic because they

1) weren't trying to renovate an existing process / maintain production while also building their first "car of the future"

2) crunch the shit out of their employees in ways that wouldn't be sustainable _or possible_ for other existing auto cos

if you've ever wondered why in-car entertainment/navigation systems always feel kind of clunky and weird:

it's because car companies are basically operating on plans 5-10 years in the future. there's a long long long process to go from a car's model design to production, and they plan and build so far in advance that by the time their "high tech" solution of today makes it to market, it's fuckin' old
