I didn't think the Charlie Stross lecture was particularly good. Like many scifi folks he was predicting the recent past rather than the future. There were also obvious problems with his narrative:
- No acknowledgement that users can, or have the potential to, control their own use of technology
- Maybe social media companies are not needed. Alternatives exist. (thinking emoji)
- He seems to assume that 3% of sociopaths will always dominate the rest, presumably via technology. What about technology which breaks this hierarchy?
- Video propaganda has existed for over half a century. What he's describing is just a very minor variation on what is already a sophisticated domain
