    Who knows what the four "device control" characters in ASCII (0x10 - 0x14) were originally used for? All the obvious control actions for mechanical typing devices (line feed, carriage return, etc.) already have dedicated characters of their own...

      @solderpunk apparently they're based off the Teletype Model-33, and they mean
      0x11 (XON) start/resume transmitting on the wire)
      0x12 start punching tape
      0x13 (XOFF) stop transmitting on the wire
      0x14 stop punching tape

      also it had an actual physical bell attached, hence 0x7 BEL
