pop-up public hackerspaces
I would like to hear about them
pop-up public hackerspaces
I would like to hear about them
a hackerspace built inside three RVs that caravan around North America.
who is working on that?
Imagine the power that taking a fabrication lab and the necessary knowledge to utilize it through rural spaces on a schedule would provide to the residents of the less populated parts of the world.
@djsundog talk about circuit hacking!
were I a younger dog...
@djsundog like those libraries that roam around
but with 3D printers
@Sargoth yes! I lived recently-ish in a smol coastal farming town that relied on the monthly visit from the bookmobile. it was An Event.
@djsundog haven't seen anything recent, but I do remember folks talking about doing it. https://laughingsquid.com/hackbus-a-community-wiki-for-mobile-hack-vehicles/
@djsundog breaking bad but instead of an rv meth lab it's an rv ic fab
@djsundog Not quite the same thing, but the Makermobile runs classes for kids and travels around British Columbia: http://www.makermobile.org
@erinbee yes, this is a fantastic model!
@erinbee @djsundog in many British towns there is something called a "playbus". Perhaps we should have that but for adults too 😁
this is my towns official playbus. Often the bus itself is of interest to spotters as its usually a preserved service bus from about 20-30 years ago (but repainted in bright colours)
Old buses aren't expensive, but the driver *does* usually need a special type of driving license in most countries due to their size and/or the number of passengers (even if not strictly public transport), I think they get retired town drivers to volunteer for this.
@vfrmedia @erinbee see, stuff like that is awesome. we need more of it!
@djsundog My laser cutter is related to that. It's designed to be stowed away vertically, when not in use (impossible with the majority of cutters). It's also just under 4 feet wide so it fits into the back seat of a typical sedan and tolerate a bit of rough handling
The goal being it can be moved form place to place without taking up too much space and can be setup by one person within minutes and start cutting away
Ideal for a pop-up hacker space
@djsundog We had a visitor to our space recently who had launched a hackerspace run out of a van.
He'd sold off the vehicle and other assets of that mobile space after committing to a new makerspace, only for the management of said new space to declare bankruptcy a few days later.
