For me, Telegram is just one massive facepalm.

    https://www.politico.eu/article/irans-telegram-revolution

The main things wrong with Telegram are:

    • Proprietary server, running who knows what

    • All users critically depend on one server, run by some dude (also see Signal)

    • Probably bad boutique crypto algorithm (remember the Snowden quote about boutique crypto being the easiest to break)

@bob What so you reckon about Wire? Not quite equivalent but using as a Skype alternative and it also supports messanging.

@hattiecat Wire might be ok if they also have server federation. Thing is though I think they're aiming at corporate intranets.

@bob Any federated alternatives to Skype which are easy to use then? (Wire is easy to set up and multiplatform, so especially good for nontechnical friends who are concerned about Skype.)

I was trying out #Wire a month ago after it was brought up at our https://kwvoip.ca/ meeting. It has a huge, bloated client, and a fairly inactive user community. Great if you want to have a short video conference at an appointed time, not so good to have running in the background just in case some buddy wants to say "Hi". I'm no longer running it. !XMPP is still a better solution for me. If someone wants to experiment with #Wire contact me via !XMPP to set up a session :-) xmpp:bjonkman@sobac.com
