I thought the purpose of money was proxy barter. E.g. instead of having to find someone who will trade a bushel of my potatoes for a bushel of their wheat, someone who wants my potatoes can trade me some tokens, and then I can trade them to the person with wheat, who can then trade them to the person with cloth, etc...
