TIL about Freedombox, which is a Debian variant built around hosting social services yourself (GNU Social, XMPP, mail, etc.).

@rocky1138 You should also take a look at !freedombone, as it is actively developed by someone with a focus on practicality. (Less pie in the sky ruminating in #freedombone than in #freedombox.)

Thanks! Do we have a clear definition legally of what happens when a person runs a Tor exit node in Ontario, Canada?
-
@rocky1138 @lnxw48a1 I haven't had any trouble personally running one in Ottawa but I also made local law enforcement aware I was and what I could and could not provide them if they had a legal need to look into something that went across them, which many are understandably not comfortable doing.
In general in Canada as long as you aren't transmitting CP across a server and cooperate with LEAs that have warrants you're fine.

@rocky1138 @lnxw48a1 Basically how much trouble you'll have here in my experience is directly proportional to how responsive you are to search warrants, but it can pre-empt the otherwise sometimes-shocking event of police showing up at your door unannounced with one if you've been in touch beforehand. My experience is that if you work with them in that regard they'll generally try to work with you and give you more space, whereas if you're not known to them they're just going to rock up on your door because they don't know if you're going to be some sort of flight risk.

@rocky1138 I think that would have to be answered by someone who lives in #Canada, especially someone in the Province of Ontario.
However, !freedombone does not have to be configured as a #Tor exit ( @bob, correct me if I'm wrong. ) or even as a hidden service.

@lnxw48a1 @rocky1138 Freedombone doesn't implement Tor exit or relay but does have onion addresses for apps and optional Tor bridging. It's not recommended to run exit or relay nodes on the same system as onion addresses.
