    Signal's reliance on Google and lack of federation (centralized architecture) make it harder to recommend. XMPP with OTR, hosted on your own server, with Tor connections might be a better bet but no push notifications on mobile (particularly on iOS) without using third-party push services. Which is why Signal uses Google? (XMPP has a push option but needs server support.)
