Finished Riven, it was very satisfying slowly unearthing what to do https://gs.smuglo.li/attachment/825927

@awg i don't understand why people claim these puzzles are ''diabolically difficult'' - the only thing that required me to think for a moment was the maths puzzle about d'ni numerals - and even that was easy once you realise there are patterns there that can basically lead you to the solution

@roka yeah, myst and riven have a reputation for difficulty that is completely undeserved imho.

@awg myst was easy modo all the way through - i guess the reputation comes from the games being a bit obtuse about everything at first. it becomes logical only later.

@roka yes, myst, in particular, was a cinch imo.  i thought it humorous there was a proper parody game made about its difficulty.

@awg the only difficult i can imagine there being in myst is either when you spend five minutes on wandering and never understand what 'tower rotation' means or if you're tone deaf and attempt to access selenitic age

@roka ah, yeah.  I couldn't access selenetic on my first play through because I didn't have sound working in windows 3.1 at the time.  ;-)

@awg mm, not sure now but isn't it possible to bruteforce rocket book access puzzle if you assume every position of the slider is one piano key? i got it on my second try so not sure if it would work, ehh.

@roka I don't remember tbh.  I was a dumb kid, so probably didn't even occur to me.

all I remember is I got it working a day later, spent another day or two playing through the game I'd already played -- this time with sound -- then licked selenetic access with ease.

@awg speaking of selenitic, i don't understand why the cart ride puzzle is considered to be annoying - you only need to remember four distinct sounds for each cardinal direction and they're easy to describe on paper

@awg oh btw, i played them to completion with little to no prior knowledge on scummvm - mohawk feels stable enough at this point.

@awg i suspect riven might not be working 100% correctly as far as endings go - it displays a white screen with music playing and only then it displays credits to silence. other than that, perfectly usable.

@awg mm, not sure if that's in the original but it felt odd. it happens with all bad endings i managed to get too (which, amusingly, are all gained when doing idiotic shit or forgetting your goals in the first place)
