A lot of Mastodon's success comes from spending money to have so-called Tech journalists give it sumptuous review blow jobs.

@deutrino Twitter doesn't let you run ads for free, you know.

@maiyannah Sure, but did somebody involved with Mastodon pay for articles about it? My understanding is that Twitter did a particularly dense cluster of dumb shit last April, there was a big influx to Mastodon, and enough social media journalist types caught wind of it that a couple fairly well known ones wrote an article, causing many of the coattail riders to also write articles. So there was a big flash in the pan and then they lost interest again.

@deutrino You think the tech journalists did those articles (where they couldn't even describe Mastodon accurately even in the context of positive spin) out of the goodness of their heart?

I wish I had your niavete.

@maiyannah @deutrino Considering tech journalists I'd consider "out of the emptiness of their cranial cavity" an option as well. More seriously it could also be a type of virtue signalling by journo's given how Masto likes to present itself as progressive.

@maiyannah These writers are as driven by the web version of the 24 hour news cycle as anybody else in "journalism" today. The migration last April was big enough to pad the article quota for some social media journalists. Also, much of the press was nonplussed at beat, negative at worst.

I'm gonna go with Occam's Razor on this one and say that it was more likely a flash in the pan based on the targeting algorithms of the tech media hivemind. See also: ello.

@maiyannah eh, we can agree to disagree on this point. Like I said though, I'm glad there are other people working on different software, and I'm also not sorry I specifically picked the mastodon instance I did based on lack of instance blocks. There are plenty of cool people on the black sheep nodes :p
