I imagine they were some kind of crusader who somehow got cursed while traveling through the woods and was sealed within a prison of constantly burning stone and wood (so uh, fun). They can now be found trying to convince travelers passing by to throw water on them or break them outta their weird skin prison. Won't you help a friend out?!
