@awg @ajr From what I heard the point of the foot binding was to make the women incapable of working, thereby proving that they didn't need to work for they sustenance. An "expensive signal" of wealth and status.

I also heard an amusing fact regarding the emperors being seen as representatives of Heaven. Since they were divine it followed that everything bad that happened was their fault. So people would kill them over bad harvests.
