@thatbrickster I wonder if it might be due to needing to provide notifications. On mobile you have to either rely on Google or Apple push services, a third-party, roll your own or poll in the background (better if you can keep a long TCP connection open to the server). If you're averse to Google/Apple then in reality polling is the only option. XMPP now has a push extension but it requires server support. That said, I haven't had much of a battery problem with Conversations. Things are worse on iOS where I understand the OS will kill long running background tasks so you can't just keep a TCP connection open to the server in the background. Apple's mail client has to resort to real polling, and the ChatSecure notifications are poor to nonexistent.

I could be spouting bollocks though, so would welcome corrections to my limited understanding.
