elomatreb :blobpats:@er1n The thing with the "it was all so simple back in the day" take is that it only really works if you speak English, there is a generation of German speakers who just learned to never type Ä and substitute Ae (oe and ue for the others respectively) in computers, because that's the way it was (not directly shaping but it already breaks the 1-byte-per-character assumption)
