            Case in point: The Harrier jump jet. The mechanism to rotate the exhaust nozzles was a chain-and-sprocket drivetrain lifted from motorcycle design. One of the primary engineers was a biker, said "let's use this until we find something better".

            (The never found anything better.)

                     I think it's less that we took that as a guiding principle as that it's humanity's defining characteristic

                     we are the Rube Goldberg species
