The Danish word for food ("mad") has two distinct forms. The uncountable form is equal to the English word.

And then there's the countable form ("en mad" / a food) which is always a slice of ryebread with something of top. E.g. ostemad = ryebread with cheese.

Some of those "madder" are so easy to eat without utensils, that we call them "håndmadder" (= hand foods).

"HÃ¥ndmadder" is also an old metaphor for being slapped and/or hit in the face. So there's that.
