A logo for the fediverse
Second attempt, because I didn't make my first post public m)
Hi @Gargron @Dennis Schubert @Waithamai Dragonqueen Dragonqueen @lain @Benjamin Neff @Jason Robinson 🐍 🐍 @Michael Vogel @🐰yp🥚li✝️e Pet🥚van @maiyannah @robmyers @zauberstuhl
I'm writing my idea to you, because you are the developers of federated social networks or heavily involved.
Two months ago I came up with the idea we should have a logo for the federation https://horche.demkontinuum.de/display/2196d4ee575a6a49fa7a261877239717 that connects all the wonderful projects we are working on. So I called for suggestions for a logo, that is abstract enough but still has some aspects to be "cutified", for non-technical people;)
So we came to this raw logo, that is representing two people holding hands and scharing thoughts. Or maybe you see the helmet of an astronaut, or something else ;) It's black (and white) so it can be coloured in every way that fits our needs.

I created as an example a quickshot of a poster (maybe not all projects?) and a banner, how it could look like.

I will put that logo and every poster banner I'll create under creative commons and put it on gitlab in several file formats.
I kindly ask you, if you like to use that logo to show people outside our federation that we are connected networks, where every project has its own beautiful and powerful aspects?
Please tell me your opinion. Thank you 🌻
PS: There will be as well (non-tech) podcast in german about the fediverse and each project that is contributing to this wonderful galaxy.

Concerning the logo: @Jason Robinson 🐍 made a sticker of number 14: https://horche.demkontinuum.de/photo/1eb473c2db4183aee6de8fad34f8a6dd/
He made it in an oval shape - and it looks absolutely gorgeous.
Concerning the name: Of course we shouldn't confuse the people. So we shouldn't use a name that is currently occupied to a closer group of systems.
I guess we will find a way.

I find myself begrudgingly agreeing with Dennis, I don’t think this logo brings any value other than aesthetic. In my opinion, the main tenet of the decentralized social network is that there’s no centralized structure nor identity, it is intended by design as a loose patchwork of systems and instances with no centralized oversight. I believe a unique logo, beyond the potential confusion of expecting seamless compatibility between the systems arbitrarily chosen for popularity, would contribute to erase the diversity of philosophies that exist within the Federation or the Fediverse.
Of course you can use this logo in your own publications about decentralized social networks, but I disagree with any official adoption by Friendica in particular.

I thought there were more "Let's try it, we don't have anything to lose" instead of "We don't want that, because *.*".
I understand your disappointment, and I'm sorry about it, but maybe you didn't realize that you were touching the core identity of different projects, and it is a very sensitive subject. In essence, we tried to explain to you in many words exactly why both Diaspora and Friendica projects actually have something to lose trying out your logo. Diaspora stands to lose way more than Friendica because of its popularity, but I personally agree with Dennis' core argument not to use your logo in an official manner for Friendica as well.
However, we probably could start showing logos for the protocols we support, like the Diaspora protocol, OStatus, and soon ActivityPub.

I know that OStatus has a logo, but I don't know of any logos for the other protocols.
