I went to high school 2005-2009

my mom went to the same high school 30 years earlier

when she went there, guys left shotguns and rifles in gun racks in the back of their pickup trucks all the time

nobody ever got shot, nobody ever discharged a firearm on school grounds... nothing like that ever happened

in 1991, a guy held up a class at that same high school with a sawed-off shotgun. nobody was hurt in the end

when I was in school, a guy got a felony for leaving a paintball gun in his car

what has changed in my parents' lifetime? why are we so afraid of guns? how come we never heard about firearm violence in and near black inner-city schools in America on the news, yet these weird, likely-staged shootings get endless media coverage for many weeks a year, moving Overton windows like crazy and instilling fear and paranoia into the populace?

I guarantee the sawed-off shotgun incident at my high school never made national news back in '91. the guy shot ten shells into a wall as they negotiated with him on the intercom, and everyone made it out alive and physically unhurt. also, it was a sawed-off shotgun, which didn't fit the "handguns especially are Satan" narrative from back then (notice how it has flipped since, and now "AR-15s" are the Real Problem?)

imagine how much better off we all would be if these mass media hysteria events never happened. legitimate, non-staged firearms-at-school incidents would be reduced if the media didn't downright glamorize the idea annually. people wouldn't be scared into submission, terrified of firearms, which are just as powerful and deadly as the automobiles they drive every day (arguably less so)
