Some underappreciated factors in Mastodon's success is its ease of installation, the comparable ease compared to even ten years ago of buying domains and hosting; increase in technical competency among the educated population.

People with little technical skills but can follow instructions seem to be able to install a Mastodon instance. It is much more difficult and error-fraught to install gnu social.

I cannot comment on Pleroma as I have not installed it yet.
