Playing around with #diaspora has made me ponder the difference in use case between it and #Mastodon. I like both, and they can federated with one another, but other than UI they don't seem particularly different. Once you get past the paint job, are they really different enough to use both?

@inkslinger major differences: Disapora has no char limits (by default), threaded replies, private message options, realtime chat (XMPP) etc

@inkslinger in a nutshell, the #fediverse (GNUSocial, Mastodon, PostActive, Pleroma), is a federated replacement for the #birdsite ...

@strypey Yeah, I understand the intended use cases of each, but a lot of it boils down to UI differences, rather than real, technical differences. Of course, UI has a major impact on the way you use a piece of software, so #fediverse is inherently different from #thefederation just because of the UI differences, never mind any real technical difference that may or may not exist.

@strypey Yeah. Threaded replies are mostly a visual difference, but they definitely lead to a a different style if interaction and conversations that can span days, rather than just a few hours as tends to be the case on a more ephemeral-seeming timeline like Mastodon or GNU social.

@inkslinger true, but 'all messages public' vs. 'private message options' is an important technical difference, as is #XMPP integration

@inkslinger ... and as @celesteh pointed out, moderation tools (or lack there-of) isn't merely a different paint job either

@inkslinger The Fediverse and the Federation federate in a very limited sense -- you can follow a Diaspora account from GNU Social. I don't even know how you would do it from Mastodon.

But there's no interaction, it's just like following an RSS feed (which is basically what's going on).
