I'm thinking about editing my hosts file to make sure any links pointing to YouTube that I click become Hooktube instead. Is that possible? -

The hosts file maps hostnames to IP addresses. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_(file) -

@zorak perhaps if hooktube has a fixed IP this can work, and I can update it if it changes later -

The hosts files lets you look up IP addresses for a given host name. There is no concept of remapping URLs at this level of networking.

For what you're asking, this seems to do the trick: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hooktube/ -

@zorak that's neat, but I wanted something that would completely block my computer from accessing youtube.com, not just the browsers. -

This can be problematic, but you can use the hosts file for that. E.g. https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts

However, using additional Firefox add-ons with !Tor Browser is to be avoided: https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#TBBOtherExtensions In conversation from social.ilikefreedom.ro permalink
