    I'm still thinking through what it means to use a federated system vs a centralized.

    Most articles talk about Mastodon as the "Twitter alternative," but I don't buy that. The fundamental premise of Mastodon is distribution, not centralization. Twitter exists to make money and every decision is based on achieving that goal. Mastodon exists to connect people and it does so in powerful, democratized ways.
