Words are so clunky. I hate language. I cant wait for the day which we can communicate solely by reading emotions.

@cybermeow I feel that the degenerate trend toward yet more emoji is a shallow acknowledgement of this on some level. a terrible answer tbf, but subconsciously almost the right question. -

@awg Degenerate is the first word I want to go.
its useless and awful. degenerating from what? the status quo? it implies things are getting worse. WHo is to say whats worse? its all subjective, you are saying that in your opinion a deviation is worse for you or your in group then the status quo.
Degenerate is an angry arrogant word used commonly by people who feel that there is inherent merit in the hand they were dealt form the start and I react negatively to the people who say it.

@awg also I think I disagree, I think the emoji serves to convey emotion (albeit usually sarcastic) in a medium infamous for not conveying emotion.
Before emojis it was a rule of thumb that text over the internet would not convey the emotion that you were feeling, but now we have these little dopey blobs of color that we can sling at eachother and you just dont hear as frequently "sorry I didnt mean it like that" unless someone is dishonestly backtracking.

@awg you know after writing that I realize that I am actually agreeing with you.

@cybermeow your lance at the term "degenerate" is fair, though. it's a pretty nasty word, and I admit to using it recklessly at times. -

@cybermeow "deviant" is a word I can't personally come to terms with enough to use (except in jest). for some of the reasons you give actually.
it's probably splitting hairs, but the connotation for "deviant" (for me) is akin to "degenerate" but always with a human face and always due to their nature rather than the choices they make. while you can describe a contemporary trend or event as a sign of social degeneracy -- with the implication that it doesn't have to be as it is, usage of "deviant" doesn't imply to me any possibility for redemption.-

@awg I can see that. At the same time deviant makes no assumptions about merit or moral integrity. Its not just that it cant be helped, its also that it doesnt matter and its fine if it happens. I think. Maybe.
See this is the problem words are so subjective. They mean differnt things to different people and they are so caught up in the culture that one learned them in that just using some words will divide us and turn us against each other and yet we have to be empathetic of that.

@cybermeow agree esp on that last point. if there's one common failing I see as hallmark to online communication, it's a failing in basic empathy. we're honestly doomed without it imo, no matter what words we choose. -
