Saying this with the best possible intentions and revealing my ignorance, what is it that makes @matrix interesting? I have played with riot.im a bit and what I see is like IRC with media.
This is not bad, but also not obviously something that would make people as enthusiastic as I hear. Any pointers?

@mjjzf the interesting bit is that the rooms are replicated over all the users' servers so no single entity controls the conversation. you could say that riot is to slack as mastodon is to twitter.

@matrix Federated. Does this happen when one joins the discussion? If I am on server 1 and join a discussion on 2, the room is mirrored on 1?
