    USA Loves Free Speech except in 1940 with the passage of the Smith Act; which made it illegal advocate for revolution, imply revolution would be good, or be affiliated with organizations which talk about revolution.

    This law is actually still on the books it's just been weakened so that you can advocate/teach revolution "as an abstract concept" but can't advocate for "specific actions to overthrow the government which pose a legitimate threat"
