Something I keep seeing on UK tech websites are claims that young people (boys and girls alike) *do* want to work in "tech" but now have visions of being in a US style startup or making money selling apps/ads, whereas the actual jobs and skillsets required here are in maintenance of more mundane stuff like telecoms and power networks or syadmins in smaller orgs (without which nothing else works!) or coding for companies making ERP databases..
