            It's a meme joke, seach the sentence "anime was a mistake".
            Otherwise no federation isn't a mistake by itself. The mistakes that are happening is for example giving similar tools that twitter as, recently "private/direct" messaging was added but it's not a good function, why ? because it isn't private since it's accessible by the admins, if someone want's to send a message directly in private there's gpg emails. The arrival of mastodon did bring a lot of problems because of popular demands or because the admins are not ethical persons or aren't technically competent enough.
