Why is everyone drooling over Mario? Sonic the Hedgehog was as good, even better.

About a month ago at my friend's birthday we accidentally landed on the topic of childhood games. Everyone in the room (but me) was a fan of Mario. For several minutes they discussed the new iPhone cases with Mario they had just baught, and lamented they didn't know where to buy posters.
Then I asked "Hey, and who played HoMaM"? Dead silence.
Suddenly, I felt very lonely.
