    > NSFW-hiding was a hack

It was a tag. NSFW was a tag. If you look at the atom feed that gets federated, it was included as a tag. Tags add machine-readable and human-classifiable meaning to content. NSFW tag denoted that a notice was NSFW, "NSFW" being an ancient internet idiom for "sensitive". It was not a "hack", it was a frontend extension that people had asked for, and after I provided it, worked fine for a couple years.
