@revenant i think there's a benign subset of the community with positive memories of _the cathedral & the bazaar_ and maybe his association with publishing the mozilla code or whatever who have just kind of subsequently missed the memo on his actual nature.

(he also clearly has a population of actual fanboys, but they can generally be written off on the same grounds that one writes off esr himself.)
