In the 1980s in university I attended a talk by Michael Collins, the astronaut who stayed aloft while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon. The talk was not about space, but about religion (and why I should join). I wrote an angry column about the deception. The next day I received a big bouquet of daffodils from someone signed "victim of the Scopes Monkey Trial". To this day I associate daffodils, and the annual cancer drive, with space and religion and deception. #smallstories
