Modern Industrial@joseph Not quite that cut and dry. Instances don't sync your profile (so you can't just set up shop elsewhere, like a cloud backup), but they do sync your toots for a certain time period.
You have the ability to download your profile from your instance, but not the ability to upload it elsewhere at this point. So you don't necessarily lose your data, but you do lose your presence when an instance closes.
